National Barn Quilt Trail

Plumas is one of two counties in California participating in the National Barn Quilt Trail. Barn quilts are painted on the outside of barns, fences, garages, and businesses. The barn quilt tradition is celebrated every September with a countywide driving tour.

Collins Pine Museum

The open-beam structure provides an appealing space with different species of wood from the area. The museum contains exhibits on lumbering, forestry, principles of sustainability, and Collins history. Outside the building is a viewing path with trucks and equipment that were used by Collins Pine Company in the 1940s - 1960s. The museum is open mid-May to mid-October, Wednesday - Saturday, 9:00am - 5:00pm, and there is no charge for visiting.

Fern Falls

The falls are accessible from the Fern Falls Overlook Trail. The trailhead is located on Gold Lake Road about 6 miles from Highway 89. The trail is short but rocky, with big granite steps and gorgeous views. Look for penstemons, mountain lilac, and mariposa lilies growing in rocky soils. Please note that the trail can be hard to follow at times, but if you generally follow the creek, you will find the falls!

A popular destination for snowmobilers, this trail leads to the top of Mt. Ararat and offers large open spaces and spectacular views. This trail begins near Lookout Rock at the intersection of the Cutoff/Lookout Rock Trail and Willow Creek Trail. Ararat Loop ends where it intersects Willow Creek Trail.
