Shasta County

California’s largest city north of Sacramento, Redding is a recreational hub boasting everything from world-class fishing on the renowned Sacramento River to the educational Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The internationally-renowned Sundial Bridge stretches over the Sacramento River as part of Redding’s 36-mile network of trails.

Shasta Lake, the largest lake in California, holds the title of “Houseboat Capitol of the World”. The lake was formed by Shasta Dam, the tallest center overflow dam in the world. Lake Shasta Caverns, dated at least 200 million years, are made entirely of limestone and feature every type of possible formation, including stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, columns and flowstone.

Off Highway 44E is the northern entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. Just north of the park are the Subway Cave Lava Tubes, an underground, easily-explored volcanic phenomenon.

Lion Wash Falls

Lion Wash Falls is 14 feet of water falling in all directions, creating a very interesting look. The wide and shallow river drops off a cliff with a few different levels before coming to a large pool at the base. The waterfall is not visible from the easily accessible trail so keep your ears open to lead the way. Driving Time: 48 mins/39 miles from Redding. Difficulty: Easy

If strolling through the backcountry with little or no company is a goal, then this route promises to deliver. Naming this route the Manzanita Creek Trail can be a tad deceptive as the path avoids the namesake creek for all but the final stretch of the nearly 5-mile journey to the head of the canyon below Crescent Cliff.

Most of the trail passes through quiet forest, which thins enough occasionally to allow fine views of Chaos Crags and Lassen Peak. Winter enthusiasts can enjoy the first 3.25 miles of the Nobles Emigrant Trail from Manzanita Lake to Sunflower Flat on a marked route, returning to the lake on the snow-covered Lassen Park Road. Most of the trail passes through quiet forest.

Potem Falls is accessible from highway 299-East heading toward Burney, take a left on Fenders Ferry Road to the trailhead. The fall is also accessible by boat by taking the Pit River arm on Shasta Lake. There is a 9 mile dirt road that leads to the pull out for Potem Falls. It is a fairly steep and difficult trail to get to the fall. There is a small rope swing, and a beach.

This hike starts off following the gentle grade of the Lassen Park Road but then rises sharply and climbers are forced to overcome 1,000 feet of elevation in one mile. The first half of your journey to Ridge Lakes follows the gentle grade of the Lassen Park Road, gaining a mere 200 vertical feet in 0.75 mile. The second half is a different story altogether with elevation inclines becoming much more challenging.
